Autumn starts tomorrow at exactly 22:02!

The astronomical autumn begins on Friday 22 September at 22.02 hours and will extend over 89 days and 20 hours, until December 21, when winter begins, according to the National Geographic Institute of Spain (IGN). The beginning of autumn occurs when the day is shortened to last the same as the night and that moment varies by year. That date and time may vary between September 21 and 24. In this century however, it will only oscillate between the 22 and 23 of September in the northern hemisphere.

Estepona watchtowers included in historical study

The watchtowers of Casasola and Guadalmansa, located in Estepona, have been included in a study of the University of Málaga (UMA) on the Nasrid towers in the Kingdom of Granada. The study tries to compare the different constructions and to learn new data on the constructive techniques that were used in the Nasrid period, specifically between the XIII and XV centuries. For example, the Guadalmansa beacon tower is one of the few square-shaped structures, and it seems that it was part of a defensive zone against pirates, although it may also be linked to fishing and agricultural activity.

Costa del Sol beats record of monthly recycling waste collection

In August 2017, 1 million kilos of light packaging, 1.5 million kilos of glass and 4.5 million kilos of cardboard and paper were recycled. There was an increase of 2.01% compared to the data recorded in August of last year. The president of the Mancomunidad, Margarita del Cid, said that “this confirms the involvement of the citizens of the Costa del Sol with recycling and care for the environment, as well as the effort we put in to raise awareness of all inhabitants of the region of the importance of this type of actions”.

Mijas basketball event this weekend

Villa de Mijas Basketball Tournament starts this Saturday September 16th at 6 pm in the María Zambrano Park. Mixed teams, male and female, from beginners to veterans can participate. The basketball delegation of Malaga was very pleased to resume this activity in Mijas after many years. Fuengirola converts street to pedestrian zone

Fuengirola’s council is beginning works to remodel the Juan Brava street in Los Boliches with a budget of 141,000 euros. The road will become pedestrianised and the works will be completed in 23 days. It was deliberately not started until the busy summer season was finished.

Dredging of the port of Estepona is completed

The dredging operation of the port of Estepona is completed after an investment of 344,700 euros. This intervention has improved the navigation conditions by reaching a depth of 5 meters in the port area. It has been carried out after a request made by the fishing sector to the Port Agency. Around 40,000 m3 have been extracted from the sea floor.

ECB leaves interest rates at 0

The ECB has kept the Eurozone interest rate at 0% after its recent meeting. As a result, Spanish mortgage rates have remained low, around 1.5%, and are expected to stay so until January 2018 at least, when the ECB has stated it will re-examine its stance.

Wind power production in Andalucia increases by 26%

Endesa reported that its wind electricity production in Andalucia has increased by 26% compared to last last year, from its 12 wind farms. These wind farms have produced in the first six months of 2017 a total of 418 GWh, thanks to favorable weather conditions. This energy is the equivalent of the annual consumption of the population of Córdoba and Jaén together.

The Jorge Guillén Library tours the Malaga playgrounds to encourage reading

The Jorge Guillén library will tour four playgrounds of the Malaga centre, from this Monday 11 of September until 31 of October, presenting ‘The Park of the Tales’. This is a library on wheels through which it will make available books to promote reading and storytelling to children. The activity is aimed at ages zero to seven years and will take place from Monday to Thursday from 19.00 to 20.00 hours.

Malaga port receives record 200,000 tonnes in 2 weeks

The port of Malaga has achieved, since last week, a very important milestone in relation to dry bulk traffic. In addition, this upward trend will continue also this week, being able to reach a movement of up to 200,000 tons in 15 days. There has been an increase in the movement of agricultural food bulk, which accounts for 63% of solid bulk traffic in the 15 days mentioned -120,500 of the 191,000 tons forecast.
